Lendonwood Gardens

The non-profit Lendonwood Gardens in Grove, Oklahoma was established in 1995. The 3-acre gardens were created by Dr. Leonard Miller, a retired dentist. The Japanese aspects of the garden consist of an “oriental” garden and “Japanese pavilion,” both of which are a part of the larger overall gardens

These gardens are more Japanese inspired than truly Japanese. Plantings, paths, pond, and island are all nice.

The pavilion is based on the Hosokawa Pavilion in Japan, and provides wonderful views of a large Koi pond.

The metal bridge leading to the pavilion is not authentically Japanese and, in my opinion, unsightly and utilitarian. The island in the center is a nice feature, including its stones (and fake plastic bird). However, the metal bridge leading to the island and the wooden fenced-in deck around the island are poorly thought out. Instead, a Moon bridge would be preferable, and the deck and railings removed. Essentially, it’s ok to view the island, but people should not be walking upon it. The decking simply takes away from the viewing experience.

It's a good mixture of American and Japanese ideas, but this garden could very easily be transformed into a more authentic Japanese garden with some of the changes referenced above.
