Gan Ryuu Tei – Cleveland Botanical Garden

Gan Ryuu Tei, the Japanese garden located at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, was designed by David Slawson, who was trained under Japanese garden master Kinsaku Nakkene. The garden is comprised of the Karesansui (dry landscape) and Tea garden styles of Japanese gardens.

Entering the garden is a pleasant experience, similar to entering a tea garden. Stepping stones, lanterns, a small bridge, water basins, and a veranda draw the visitor to the main attraction of the garden - the dry landscape features.

Although it is not a large garden, like a Japanese stroll garden, it's design allows for one to relax and meditate with their thoughts. Viewed during the spring, the combination of flowering Azaleas framing the cascading stones simulating a water fall, allows one to sit and contemplate the beauty of the overall scene.

Overall, a small but lovely garden to visit - be sure to visit in spring to get the full dramatic effect of early blooms.
